Quantity surveying Comparing builders' quotes Building contracts and payment terms Managing costs and changes during a build

Fiona Hall is a quantity surveyor at Construction Q, a quantity surveying and project management practice, and the guest on Episode 9 of The Healthy House Podcast, “Before You Build: The Advice That Could Save You Thousands.”

On the episode, Fiona explains why the cheapest quote is not always the best value, how to compare builders’ quotes like for like, and what provisional sums mean for the final bill. She makes the case for getting the scope, the contract and the payment terms right before work begins, and for understanding what a change will cost before agreeing to it.

The conversation also covers artificial intelligence in construction alongside the value of practical experience, apprenticeships and routes into the industry, and how Fiona started her business with £500 in her spare bedroom. It closes on her charity work with Cash for Kids.
