Andrew Martin is the founder of The Damp Men and the guest on Episode 4 of The Healthy House Podcast, “Why Does the Damp Industry Have Such a Bad Reputation?”

Andrew’s career began in bricklaying and general construction before he moved into damp-proofing and eventually set up The Damp Men, a family-run property preservation business covering the South West. On the episode, he talks about the sales-focused practices he saw elsewhere in the industry that made him question it, and why he believes honest diagnosis has to come before any treatment is recommended.

Much of the conversation is a case against reaching for the same fix by default. Andrew argues that chemical damp-proof course injections are prescribed far more often than they need to be, and that a moisture-meter reading on its own is not proof of rising damp — the real cause is just as likely to be leaking gutters, blocked drains, high external ground levels, condensation or penetrating damp, and a proper survey has to rule those out first. He talks through what a thorough inspection actually looks like, from checking guttering and drainage to reading salts and bridging correctly, and why he thinks greater regulation and better collaboration between surveyors and remedial contractors would raise standards across the trade.

He also covers basement waterproofing and choosing the right system for the job, and is candid about running a family business: maintaining standards, knowing when to walk away from the wrong job, and building a career for the long term.
